Dr. Stewart grew up in the Atlanta area. As a young man, he worked his way through Emory University and the Medical College of Georgia. He repaid a Navy scholarship by serving six years as a General Medical Officer, including one year as Ship's Doctor. Not long thereafter, he did an Ob/Gyn residency at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Richland Hospital in Columbia, SC. From 1987 until present, he continues full time general obstetrics and gynecology at Laurel Ob Gyn, PA. Dr. Stewart is married to Cynthia, a writer, teacher, and gardener, and together they have raised two sons, Joel and Tom. Dr. Stewart enjoys community service, and has served on the Boards of the March of Dimes, the Asheville City Schools Foundation, and twice on the Board of Helpmate, the local domestic violence services agency. He received the NC 2007 RBC Centura Men for Change Award for this work. His hobbies include golf, hiking, and travel, and he enjoys studying old growth trees.
